Seventy-seven million baby boomers are aging. People 85 and older, the fastest growing segment of the population, are disproportionately women. These demographic trends have significant implications for victimization, safety, suffering, health, and the well-being of tens of millions of older Americans.

The types of abuse may include: physical, sexual, and emotional abuse; financial exploitation; neglect; stalking; and dating violence.  Domestic and sexual abuse in later life are subsets of elder abuse.

The age range of elder abuse victims is generally defined in state statutes. In Minnesota the age range starts at age 65.  Domestic violence and sexual assault organizations generally use age 50 and older for Abuse in Later Life programs.  Many older victims have ongoing relationships in which they trust their abusers. People like a spouse/life partner, adult children, other family members, caregivers, and fiduciaries are often the abusers. Elder abuse can occur in a person’s home, a private dwelling in the community, a facility ( such as a nursing home, unlicensed group home, or assisted living facility) or anywhere else that an older person may come into contact with a potential abuser. Often the abuse occurs as a pattern of coercive tactics to gain and maintain power and control in the relationship.

Minnesota tracks abuse involving vulnerable adults namely anyone 18 and older who is physically or mentally impaired and unable to care for themselves. Most of the reported cases of vulnerable adult abuse in Minnesota involve people 65 and older, according to the Minnesota Department of Human Services. Nationally, an estimated 11 percent of people 60 and older experience some form of abuse or exploitation, according to a 2009 study by the National Institute of Justice. But only about 20 percent of all cases are ever reported, say experts at the National Center on Elder Abuse.
